Dentistry centered around patient continuity, community, and world-class care.

Printer’s Row Dental Studio, owned by Dr. Kaori Ema has seen tremendous growth since its storefront founding in 2016.

Dr. Ema started this journey by purchasing an existing practice, which turned out to be a bit of a fixer-upper. Reforming the practice into what she envisioned would be her first major challenge after starting her entrepreneurial journey.

Roots in Dentistry and Chicago

Prior to opening, Dr. Ema served as a dentist in the US Air Force. That experience had her constantly on the move, sometimes joining humanitarian missions to provide care in other countries. Starting her own practice was a way to set roots after all of this movement and to focus more on her entrepreneurial goals.

Business ownership has always been a value in her household as both of her parents are small business owners. Her affinity to dentistry was also nurtured at an early age as both parents were in the dental field.

As a native Chicagoan who completed dental school at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), she was familiar with the Printer’s Row neighborhood. Getting to build her business in this place allowed her to directly impact the community she cares for.

Creating Her Practice and Building a Team

After purchasing the practice, her first uphill battle was figuring out how to improve the online optics of the business. It had been in the neighborhood for decades, which can have its benefits, but to remake a brand and reputation within a small community and stand out in a large city is no simple feat.

Her advantage in doing so comes partly from her servant leadership approach, which has helped her cultivate a strong team. If you visit her practice, you’ll notice the kindness and attentiveness of everyone there. You get the sense that the office is a team, professionals collaborating to create a positive experience for every patient.

A Vision for More Personal Dentistry

This sense of smoothness in the daily operations of the practice enables her comprehensive care approach and her ability to build relationships and continuity with patients. In the team’s eyes, each patient has a unique dental journey, so their focus is to be a partner in it, as opposed to focusing solely on the quantity of people coming through the door. As Dr. Ema herself says:

“My overall vision is to build personal relationships with my patients. I want to take care of patients like family members and provide the continuity that a lot of offices don’t.”

Dr. Ema provides a wide range of preventative and cosmetic procedures that she has applied to patients around the world, and now in a growing setting in Chicago. Over her career, she’s accumulated prestigious appointments, such as a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, which commend her innovation in her field. This, coupled with the community orientation of her practice, makes for a unique story in what is often seen as a slow-moving industry, especially during a global pandemic.
